Federal safety investigators said Monday that evidence suggests a private business jet broke apart in midair before plunging into a South Florida neighborhood and erupting into a massive fireball, killing all nine people on board.
The National Transportation Safety Board opened an inquiry into the Sunday afternoon crash in Greenacres, about 7 miles southwest of West Palm Beach.
The flight, a Bombardier Learjet 60 traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, entered a rapid vertical descent following reports of severe turbulence and icing.
“We do have some indication that the aircraft was breaking up before impact,” NTSB member Tom Chapman told reporters during a Monday news conference.
Air traffic control recordings captured the pilot radioing distress calls as the aircraft plummeted at rates exceeding 20,000 feet per minute. Dashcam footage from passing motorists showed the plane banking sharply before striking near a busy roadway and leaving a smoking crater.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the impact at the scene as cataclysmic. Authorities confirmed that no one on the ground was injured, though debris damaged nearby properties and forced local evacuations.
Investigators have recovered flight recorders from the wreckage as teams comb through scattered components spread across the residential zone.
