CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following an on-field collision during a Segunda División match.
The club confirmed the player’s passing on Tuesday, just a day after the tragic incident unfolded on the pitch. De Miguel collapsed during Monday’s fixture against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, which had entered seven minutes of stoppage time with the score tied 2-2.
The collision occurred when De Miguel challenged FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono. Medical personnel rushed to the pitch, and the player was transported to a hospital by ambulance and admitted to intensive care.
His condition deteriorated overnight, and hospital officials pronounced him dead on Tuesday.
“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the club said in a statement.
LaLiga expressed condolences on behalf of Spanish football, sharing grief with De Miguel’s family and teammates. Clubs across Spain, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, released statements mourning the forward.
As a mark of respect, the Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed official events, including a scheduled presentation for Spain’s under-21 international team. De Miguel joined Tenerife ahead of the previous campaign after transferring from Castellón.
