Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, ending a 23-year career with the Portuguese national team.
The 41-year-old forward released a video message confirming he will hand back the iconic No. 7 shirt.
“The day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said. “It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone — they are also made with the heart.”
Ronaldo departs international play holding global records with 234 appearances and 146 goals for his country. His career with the senior squad began in August 2003.
He captained Portugal to its first major international trophy at Euro 2016 and later added UEFA Nations League titles.
The announcement follows friction last month between the player and national team coach Jorge Jesus after Ronaldo left the squad camp during the international window.
Portugal’s Football Federation issued a statement thanking the player and confirming plans for a formal national tribute.
